Pre-announcement of a call on sustainable animal production
The ERA-NET Sustainable Animal Production (SusAn) had its Kick-off meeting in December and is planning to launch the first call for transnational research proposals in early January 2016. 37 partners from 23 countries have committed 17 m € for research. This amount will be topped up with 4 m € for research by the European Commission (EU-cofunded call).
The funding organisations agreed that future development of the European Animal Production sector will need to build on the sustainability triangle of economic competitiveness, social acceptability and environmental protection.
This co-funded call for research is open to transnational research proposals which take a systems and interdisciplinary approach to research to address multiple objectives under the following three Research Areas:
Area 1 (‘Economy’): Improve the productivity, resilience and competitiveness of European Animal Production
Area 2 (‘Environment’): Improve and manage resource use to reduce waste and enhance the environmental sustainability of European animal production
Area 3 (‘Society’): Improve on-farm practices to enhance consumer acceptability and address societal challenges associated with animal welfare, product quality and safety, biodiversity and provision of ecosystem services
Consortia should submit cross-cutting research proposals which address all three areas, and build on the sustainability triangle of economic competitiveness, social acceptability and environmental protection.
The SusAn website provides a ‘partnering tool’ that can be used by researchers to find consortium partners.
Deadline for submission of pre-proposals is planned to be in the end of March 2016.
Proposal selection
The call will follow a two steps procedure: pre-proposals submitted in step one will be checked for eligibility against call criteria and national/regional regulations as well as peer reviewed. Successful pre-proposals will be invited to submit a full proposal which in step two will be ranked by an International Evaluation Committee. The highest ranked proposals will be selected for funding.
